What happens in a diagnostic hearing test?
We talk about what you are noticing, I look in your ears, and then you are tested in a soundproof booth. The test evaluates your outer, middle and inner ear across different noise environments, and we go through the results together.
Do I need a hearing test before getting hearing aids?
Yes. The hearing aid I recommend is based on the cause and severity of your hearing loss, and only a diagnostic hearing test tells us that.
Can I try a hearing aid before I buy it?
Yes. I offer trial fittings, so you can test and compare different options before making your decision.
Which hearing aid brands do you work with?
I work with the leading manufacturers, including Phonak, Widex, Oticon, Signia, Starkey and Unitron, and I recommend on your hearing, not on a brand.
I already have hearing aids. Can you service them?
Yes. I provide servicing and repair for all hearing aid brands, so your device keeps working at its best.
Rechargeable or disposable batteries?
Both are available across a wide range of brands. Disposable batteries usually last 7 to 10 days, depending on the battery size and the model. Many brands now offer lithium-ion rechargeable hearing aids, with the battery built in, like a smartphone.
Can hearing aids connect to my phone?
Most modern hearing aids can. You can adjust volume and switch programs from an app, and many stream directly from Apple and Android phones. Some now include features like fall detection and heart rate and brain health tracking.
Can you come to me?
Yes. I offer fully mobile hearing services at your home or workplace, with state-of-the-art equipment. It is ideal for anyone with limited mobility or a busy schedule. Choose “come to me” when you book.
When is noise loud enough to damage hearing?
Protect your ears when you are exposed to sounds over 80 dB. Noise-induced hearing damage is permanent, but preventable. Long hours of loud music on headphones can do the same damage as industrial noise and tools.
What are swim plugs for?
Custom swim plugs keep water out of the ear. They are essential for children with grommets, because they protect the middle ear from infection.
Do you screen children at school?
Yes. I screen learners at schools. If a potential hearing issue is found, the child is referred for a full diagnostic evaluation, and children with suspected middle ear issues are referred to a GP or ENT depending on severity and medical history.
Where are you?
My rooms are at the NHC Medical Centre, 2988 Winnie Mandela Drive, Bryanston, 2031. The entrance is wheelchair accessible. You can also book a home or workplace visit.
What are your hours?
Monday to Thursday 08:00 to 16:30, and Friday 08:00 to 15:30. Weekends closed.
