Six tones in each ear, right ear first. Each tone starts loud and gets softer until you can’t hear it. Your answers are drawn live on an audiogram, the chart I use in the practice.
Before we start
Headphones on.
- 1Headphones on, the right way round. I test one ear at a time, so speakers will not work.
- 2Somewhere quiet, volume at a normal listening level. Do not turn it up for the test.
- 3Six tones in each ear. Each is a short pulsing beep that starts loud and gets softer. Tell me when it disappears.
- 4Nothing is recorded or sent anywhere. Your answers stay on this screen and are gone when you close it.

Drawn the way an audiologist draws it: red circles for the right ear, blue crosses for the left. The shaded band is where a normal result sits on this screening. The lower a mark, the louder that tone had to be before you heard it.
This is a screening, not a clinical test. Headphones, volume and background noise all change the result. Only a diagnostic hearing test in a soundproof booth can measure your hearing.
