RIC
Receiver in the Canal
Receiver in the Canal (RIC) hearing aids are a modern and discreet alternative to traditional Behind the Ear (BTE) models. They sit behind the ear but are smaller, with a thin wire that connects to a receiver placed directly in the ear canal.
This design looks more cosmetic and delivers superior sound quality, because the receiver sits closer to the eardrum, for clearer and more natural sound.
BTE
Behind the Ear
Behind the Ear (BTE) hearing aids suit every level of hearing loss, from mild to profound. They can be customised to suit both acoustic and cosmetic preferences, with a slim tube or an ear mould, depending on the degree of loss.
They keep the ear canal open, which helps people with normal low-pitch hearing but high-pitch hearing loss. They often have two microphones for better sound processing, longer-lasting batteries and extra durability, because the electronics sit outside the ear canal, away from moisture and wax. Properly fitted, they are discreet and often hard to see.
IIC / CIC
Invisible or Completely in Canal
Hearing aids that fit completely inside the ear canal, Invisible in Canal (IIC) and Completely in Canal (CIC), are the most discreet and cosmetically appealing option.
They suit mild to severe hearing loss and perform very well on phone calls. Because they are so small they only have room for one microphone, which can limit how well they handle noisy places. Hearing aids with two microphones usually do better there.
ITC / ITE
In the Canal or In the Ear
In the Canal (ITC) and In the Ear (ITE) hearing aids suit mild to severe hearing loss.
Being larger than CIC models, they have room for two microphones for directional hearing in noisy places, extra user controls, and a vent, an air hole that lets lower-pitched sounds escape for a more natural sound. They also work well on the phone and are generally easy to put in and take out.
